BREAST REDUCTION

Many women suffer from overly large breasts, causing daily discomfort with pain in their back, shoulders and neck and skin irritation from bra straps. Often patients complain that that it limits what clothes they can wear and often causes embarrassment.

A breast reduction or mammaplasty is a cosmetic breast surgery procedure that aims to reduce and reshape the breasts into a more comfortable and pleasing breast size.

Am I a suitable candidate for a breast reduction?

If you suffer from any of the complaints above as a result of overly-large breasts then you should be suitable for a breast reduction procedure. There are many techniques to perform breast reduction and we put age, possibility of children in the future and the desired size and shape into consideration to choose the most suitable technique.  The decision will be taken after thorough clinical examination and meticulous discussion.

What happens during a breast reduction procedure?

I perform breast reduction surgery under a general anaesthetic. It takes approximately three hours. It sometimes require an overnight hospital stay afterwards. The incision is usually around the nipple and goes down towards the under breast crease and could be combined with a small transverse incision under the breast. 

Are there any possible risks or complications associated with a breast reduction procedure?

Any operation carries some risks.  Bruising, swelling and temporary numbness of the nipple are common.  Infection, bad scarring, asymmetry, bleeding, permanent numbness, nipple / areolar loss, delayed healing, fat necrosis are uncommon. 

What results can I expect from my breast reduction procedure?

Scarring after a breast reduction procedure is an important factor to take into account, but I find that breast reduction patients are usually very happy with the results of surgery.

When will I have appointments after the operation?
Review at any time if you have any concerns.  Routinely at 1 and 2 weeks and 3 months after surgery to assess final result. Scars continue to settle for 12-18 months.
